Magical Unicorn Party Games

My niece was having a Magical Unicorn Birthday Party, and I volunteered myself to come up with a couple of games the kids could play. Of course, a Bounce House was available just in case the games bombed.

Unicorn Ring Toss
Balloons were a cool idea, but when it's windy, it's difficult, and when the rings knocked them, they popped.

So then we thought we'd use Cones and spray paint them to look like Unicorns Horns....well, cones in the size we wanted were a bit expensive for a ring toss game. We ended up repurposing the Super Mario ? Boxes (see our Super Mario Birthday Odyssey post) to make Unicorns (thank you Unikitty for the square inspiration). For the Unicorn body, we stacked two 8in. x 8in. cardboard boxes (secured with duct tape) and wrapped them in white wrapping paper. The unicorn faces were found via online image search, printed, cut, and taped to the front of the box.

For extra height (and some "wow"), we added...wait for it.......we added GOLD UNICORN HORNS!  The gold horn was created using is a unicorn horn party hat, that was glued to the top of a plastic cup and spray painted gold. For some extra "wow, we gave these magical unicorns a mane using gift wrap ribbon purchased from the Dollar Tree. The rings were iridescent hula hoops we found at Target (these were just too magical looking and so I felt they were a must have....and all three of my nieces can have one to keep after the party).  In retrospect, we should have filled the unicorn boxes with something to weigh them down so that they wouldn't get knocked over by the hula hoops.  Since they were already sealed and ready to go, we had to improvise....with wood dowels and skewers! (in a pinch, chopsticks work too - been there, done that) One wood dowel through the underside and then pressed into the ground, however the unicorns were easily knocked off the dowel, so then we inserted wood skewers into the lower edge of each side and pressed them into the ground, which held the unicorns in place quite well.  The kids had lots of fun with this very simple game...and these also made a very cute decoration for the yard.

Magical Punch Prize
Punch Prize games are my new favorite, super simple, party game. We used the following materials to create this magical punch prize board: a project display board, an x-acto knife (to cut out the holes), plastic cups (and slightly smaller cups to measure the actual area to cut through as the plastic cups will need to be glued onto the cardboard back of each hole to hold the prize), tissue paper, glue stick and a hot glue gun. First step was to measure the punch holes using a plastic cup that was slightly smaller than the plastic cups we used to hold the prizes.  then we cut the punch holes using the x-acto knife (this is when I realized that our x-acto knife was in desperate need of a new blade, ugh).  Next, cut the tissue paper into squares and glue them to the back of each hole (we doubled the tissue paper because I didn't trust the prizes to not break through during transport to the party).  Now that the punch holes have been cut out and tissue paper glued on, it was time to decorate the board!  Since this was a unicorn party, we used rainbow colored star stickers and unicorn stickers.  We also used the left over hole cut outs by wrapping them in leftover tissue paper and gluing them to the front of the board.  There was still quite a bit of white space remaining so we decided to include an instruction page explaining what to do if you get an empty cup (the empty cups were fun, they had a "special" surprise,  keep reading).  Now that the board is decorated and looking amazingly magical, it's time to place your prizes and glue on the cups to hold them.  Now, you have to have some fun here and make it like a game of chance; do you win a prize or do you get a cup full of unicorn poop? (disclaimer: no real unicorn was used in this game....#1 that's just gross, #2 where do you even find real unicorn poop?) We started by placing a few empty cups first; these are the cups with the "special" surprise, a picture of a unicorn poop emoji!  Tip: Draw an arrow on the back of the unicorn poop cups so that you know which way the picture was facing (don't want to end up with a sideways or upside down unicorn poop).  After these "special" cups were glued down, we placed the prizes on the tissue paper of the remaining punch holes.  Using a glue gun, we glued the plastic cups over the prizes (be sure to glue the cup on to the cardboard).  The rules of the game are simple: Everyone gets a turn to punch and if you punch a slot with the unicorn poop, all you get is another chance to punch again :) and again should you be so unlucky and find another unicorn poop.  This was a fun game and the look on their faces when someone got the poop was HILARIOUS!  One kid hit two in a row LOL!  Not to worry though, he got to keep punching until a prize was one (so make sure you have enough prizes for everyone).

Other Magical Unicorn Birthday Party Game Ideas:

Balloon Pop with your Unicorn Horn
Fill balloons with confetti (and maybe fairy dust/unicorn magic) and decorate the yard with the hanging balloons, have kids wear a unicorn horn with a pin on the end or a very sharp horn end, and let them try to pop the balloons.  It would also be cool to fill with water for a summer pool party and let the kids get soaked popping them. Or you can always fill them with prizes and make them like individual PiƱata's.

Unicorn Horseshoes
Horseshoes but paint them gold or some other magical sparkly unicorn color. Have the kids play a regular old game of horseshoes and the winner gets a prize.
